S.A.F. Traces Its Roots To The Marbella Family In Southern Italy.

Scottsdale Art Factory traces its roots to the Marbella family in Italy, furniture makers of the Italian aristocracy for over three hundred years. Renowned throughout Europe, the Marbella family is best known for their hand made quality works in marble, fine woods and hand forged metals.

Italian Brothers Begin New lives In Arizona Territory As Cowboys.

In 1905, the brothers Joseph and Nicholas Marbella ventured away from family tradition. They were drawn by stories of the American West – stories of land for the taking, a vast untapped wealth of gold, and the rugged life of the American cowboy. Inspired by the opportunity and excitement this new land promised, the two brothers set out from their homeland on a journey to acquire the American dream. After traveling by ship to Ellis Island, they began their quest across the country - eventually settling in the Arizona territory. The two soon acquired their land and started down the road to begin their new lives as cowboys. Learning very quickly that they were not cut out for the business of being cowboys and needing a way to make a living, they found themselves falling back on a family tradition, furniture making.

Ellis Island NY

They understood that old world Italian and Victorian styles would not be practical for the time and place and studied the roots of the fledgling American Arts and Crafts movement with individuals such as Ruskin and Morris in England and Hoffman in Scotland. They began their work in the shadows of the likes of Gustav Stickley in New York and Molesworth in Wyoming and soon decided to create an entirely original, truly Western American style. Believing in clean lines and the inherent beauty of natural woods combined with natural stone and hand forged metals, they began their work and became a part of the early 20th century’s American Arts and Crafts movement.
